Ian Dury was born on May 12 1942.
His parents separated soon after the war and Ian and his mother moved to Upminster in Essex.
At the age of seven Ian contracted Polio. He spent several years in hospital. He was then enrolled at a school for the disabled in Sussex, before moving to the Royal High Wycombe Grammar School. He left there after gaining three O-levels and moved back to Essex where he began attending Walthamstow Art College, later to be followed by the Royal College of Art. In 1970 he formed his first band, Kilburn and the High Roads. They developed a small college scene following. It was at this time Ian was working as a freelance illustrator; he then went on to teach at Luton and Canterbury Colleges of Art. In 1974 the band made their first album called Handsome, although it was well received it did not become a hit.
In 1977 Ian signed with a new record label and began working on some new material.
In October of 1977 he released his first album on the new label, it was an immediate hit.
In April 1978 he had his first top ten hit, followed by the number one Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick.
He went on to have another big hit in the UK before attempting to break into the American market, but his style was so unique they did not know what to make of him. In the 1980 |
